7 Dreamy Jams To Jig To

There’s daydreams happening while we’re awake. REM state dreams that happen while we rest. Dreams to chase and dreams that prove to be a mere figment of our imagination. Or are they? What’s with all the dreams? Better yet, what IS a dream? Hm. It depends on the context. Well what’s the first thing YOU think about when hearing the word?..

DREAM.

Maybe it’s that ultimate goal you’ve yet to accomplish. It could be that re-occurring internal visual of the best you, living your best life. Sometimes we use it to describe something far-fetched, highly impractical or down right unbelievable. Like yeah right, in your dreams bro. Maybe they are thoughts that form in the mind’s universe on a conscious and subconscious level. Thoughts that are influenced by and connected to our human experience while simultaneously expressing another dimension where we uncover secrets, omens, and inspirations that aide us in our life journey. Maybe the answer is E: All of the above. So far, we still don’t fully understand the true anatomy and purpose of the dream.

Dreams are the cause of many human fascinations. They are so much a part of our reality that artists of all types have been inspired by them to create some of their most memorable works. You see it all the time with singers, poets, rappers and musicians. Especially when they get together to make a record about one. Some songs are the unified result of many artists who were separately and simultaneously inspired by multiple dreams. Man, these guys must have it tough.

So I started thinking to myself… Like Thugnificent, right? What songs do I know that are related to this dream fiasco?

Here’s 7 songs that’ll get you thinking about the dream (and no, not the singer). Let’s roll to these vocally, guitary, drummy, dreamy tunes. Just don’t roll out of the bed and hit your head on the floor. Then you might be dreamin’ longer than you had planned.

Jennifer Lopez - Waitin' For Tonight (Dreamin' Remix)

If you haven’t found the soul mate of your dreams yet, keep on dreamin’ baby. You’re not alone in the least. They’ll show up eventually. On second thought, maybe we should focus on improving ourselves and putting in the work to find our baby like Lisa Stansfield. She went around the world looking for hers, and still didn’t find him! Well at least she didn’t spend her time dreaming, like some of us do. Hmm… I wonder if she ever got that sorted out?

Oh Well!

I know Jenny did! She tossed and turned all alone in her bed for many days! Tsk-tsk-tsk. What a foolish young lass. She could’ve easily snagged a memory foam mattress from Serta , right off Amazon. That would’ve solved that whole pesky insomnia ordeal over the weekend! Instead, J. Lo knew she had to hold on until the year 2000. But how did she know? Maybe an angel gave her a sign in her dreams, long before her strong emotional bouts with sleeplessness had occurred. Let’s stop pondering and see what she has to say about it.

Christopher Williams - I'm Dreamin'

I think I’m becoming a misanthrope. Why? Because people never ‘accidentally’ wake you up when you’re in a super deep, I-shouldn’tve-had-those-last-seven-beers, kinda sleep. Having one of those dreams where you keep teleporting to an industrial bathroom on a deserted mountain cliff that you’ve never seen a day in your life, wondering why the urinals are talking and look so ‘strange’ and there’s a flood rising up to your knees. Now…….. *SIGH* We all know what that kinda dream means, right?.. Oh don’t act like it’s never happened to you before!

You know what people always do “on purpose” instead? Ooh, I hate this isht! You know, when you’re having that dream about that dream lover you always dreamed about? When it’s so 3D, even your 5 senses are active in the dream? You two, together at last. Eating ethereal grapes and fresh organic clouds that taste like manna to you, even though you’ve never had manna before? And right when ‘IT’ is about to happen, some dorfo-wad knocks on your window like the swat team, or rings you up for something that was so important it could’ve easily waited til the end of eternity! Then they have the nerve to say, “Aw, were you sleeping?.. My bad.” SMH. I know this happens to artists in the music industry quite often. Especially the ones who are touring and interviewing with a tight schedule. You don’t believe me? Well Al B. Sure look-alike! It happened to Chris so much, he wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it go.

Dave Matthews Band - Dreamgirl

I straight up love this joint. When I first heard Dreamgirl, it gave me a breathe of fresh air. DMB hit close to home with this one. It comes with a incredibly thought provoking supernatural video to match it’s dreaminess. Even the sound FX for the video add an extra element to the music. Beautifully supportive.

But here’s what I suggest.

Listen to the song WITHOUT the video first. Do this more than once if you really wanna zone out. This way, the video can’t influence your perspective, or the inner visuals you’ll conjure up from the music alone. Add the visuals AFTER you’ve dreamed up your own thoughts. Then you can see what DMB dreamt up for the video and have a totally different, but comparative experience.

I think I learned a lot from this video. But then again, dreams can be even more deceiving than looks…

What do you think?

Now check out the video…

Lupe Fiasco feat. Jill Scott - Daydreamin'

First of all, Ms Scott just gave us all about 70 years worth of feminine black soul in 4 minutes flat! Now in my Master Splinter voice, “To innerstand anything more of such a phenomenon, one can only listen… my Son”.

Moving on.

Most of Lupe’s lyrics don’t even sound like he wrote them. You know what? Because he didn’t. They don’t even sound like he thought of them. He must’ve dreamed ’em up, because humans don’t think of stuff like that. Not while they’re roaming in the 3D plane. They would have to be resting from this earthly experience and conjuring a dream from another realm.

And we thought it was impressive that Jay and Weezy stopped writing their lyrics down, huh? Well, Lupe does it with his eyes closed. And he doesn’t even snore, so don’t sleep on ’em. He didn’t merely stop writing lyrics down, he stopped showing up to the studio all together! Thaaaaat’s right. He just gets some shut eye wherever he wills (Probably somewhere in Chicago), has a dream about the album, then wakes up and grabs the master from under his pillow.

Brilliant!

All songs recording simultaneously! And without a mic! And you know what else he does after that? He sends it straight to DiscMakers, baby! Fed-Ex Next Day Air Express with Realtime GPS Tracking and Full Insurance, Signature Required!

You know how WE do!

No, I’m kidding. He actually daydreams it into every record store inventory by falling asleep amid the flowers, for a couple of hours, on a B-E-A-U-tiful day.

Platinum!

Young Jeezy ft. Keyshia Cole - Dreamin'

Oh Snaps! I can’t even listen to this without lip-syncing the vocals, accompanied by all types of body expressions that make people look at me weird in public.

Speaking of the public, what’s with these haters? Like they don’t zone out to any songs that just so happen to be a dream come true for them. I’m shaking my head (to the point where I actually had to spell the phrase out). If these people don’t have at least one track that gets them emotionally involved, physically sporadic and vocally expressive, all at once… They just might be an android, suck your brains out!

Watch ’em. That’s all I’m saying…

As for me, I’ve got plenty dreamers in my musical arsenal. And this is one of them. PERIOD

Keyshia sang her heart out, and back in again, on this track. Now blend her Power-Full Soul Voice with Jeezy’s Solid Flow and you got something more grand that a custom Bösendorfer Opus 50 my friend! This here is a classic, about his life of hardships that make his current reality seem like a dream. While all those struggles were ensuing, trying to take him under like the undertaker, he kept pushing! He had a dream while asleep that he turned into a vision when he awoke. He then took his life and made it an album.

Simple Formula.

Word on the streets is, til this day Jeezy still insists that he “must be dreamin”. Quite the contrary. I must assure him that he is not.

Now. When and how are you gonna transform YOUR positive dreams into reality?

Bobby Darin - Dream Lover

I know. You didn’t know people from the 50’s had dreams back then, right? You thought dreams came out with the internet. Around the same time AOL came out with those 1000-hours-of-dial-up-internet-for-free CD’s that you used to get from the dollar store. We should have known THAT was bait. It took about 2 hours to make a connection and 250 hours to finish downloading a single Bobby Darin mp3. We were stoked! 🙂 Mm, mm, mm. I dream of the return of such simple days…

But, you never know. You might be onto something! Maybe Mr. Darin was the only one having dreams about a lady lover in the old days. Making his song about such, an equal phenomenon. Has dreaming lost its value in these so-called modern times? Psst! Nowadays it’s so cliche. Everybody’s doing it. Maybe Bobby was the only dreamer of his day and that’s why this song became so popular.

One time I dreamt that OG Bobby D was my big cousin, twice removed, and in his will, he left all the royalties for this song to me. I woke up shouting the Donnell Rawlings tag line (If you don’t know it, your bad). Cuz I know this song came out in 1959 and it’s still popular today. The clip I posted here has over 111 million views on YouTube and it’s technically not even a video. It’s just audio.

What’s that you ask? Did they even have videos back then?… You know what, no they didn’t. Those didn’t come out til YouTube came around!

Duh!

Look, just dance to this and think about your dream lover, OK? Let’s all hope it’s the one you’re with right now. So you don’t have to dream alone after your mate finds out you’re dreaming of someone else, before you’ve even had the chance to move in together!

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - A Nightmare On My Street

So when does a dream become officially bad. Is it like, when it gets naughty kind of bad or like, drama bad? Is there a thin line between dreams and nightmares? Or maybe a few dimensions between?

I bet The Persuaders would know.

Now why does this song even make the cut? Well, the whole song is about a dream. Most of it anyway. You never can tell with these young dreamers nowadays. Like Judy Jetson and Jet Screamer.

Anyway, In this one, Jeff and The Prince put a comedic spin on the burnt face scary guy in all the movies. What’s his name?…. You know, what’s his face? That one guy that looks hella sketchy cause he keeps rocking the same itchy ass wool sweater and steel-toe work boots, even though it’s hotter than Arizona in July. Wait, work boots? But he has no job…

WTF?

Yeah, he’s definitely not to be trusted. Now if that was anybody sane, they’d be hotter than a set of twin babies, in a Mercedes Benz with the windows up, when the temp goes up to the mid 80’s! Ahh, I can’t think of the dude’s name right now. Ah, who cares? Let’s just check out the video and see what happens!

I know there are so many more out there. What about you? Any dream songs in your archive? If so, let’s here it! Share your thoughts and a link in the comments section. Just make sure your dream song doesn’t suck so bad it causes nightmares, or it won’t be getting a spin over here.

Sorry, all dreams are NOT worth sharing…..

Or are they?

That’s a nice song. Has a heavy gospel influence. John Legend is live! And Pride is one of my favorite Films for obvious reasons. That’s whats up.

This song played on my Uncle’s old record player when I was a kid. I use to (still do) love the authentic sound and fullness of the live instruments being played around her as she sings. I would dream of 2 lovers just dancing away, dressed in the 1940s-50s garments, lost in each others arm. It was such a simple yet beautiful dream that I never forgot it…

MM hm. I love this joint right here. Start loving this one when I heard it on my Motown ‘Time Life’ Collection. Not sure if it was from Time Life, but it’s that kind of massive collection. Anyway, at first, I’m like, “Bruh, this doesn’t have anything to do with the dream concept. But reading your comment afterwards, it makes sense. And it’s Dionne. She can do her thing and take a slot anytime she wants, dream or no dream, right? 🙂

Thanks for your addition. Now go turn your childhood dream inspired my Miss Warwick into a real event. In my Fernando Jesus Martinez voice, Chu can do it eh?

Lovely song. I was hoping a “beat” didn’t drop in because it sounds so smooth and dreamy as is. To my liking, it didn’t. Beautiful voice too. Sounds like Michael Jackson was pushing through on some parts. Thumbs up. 🙂 That’s how it’s done!
