FireFox – Moving Profiles

This process is more like copying and re-linking. If done correctly, it equates a profile move, a feature FF does not offer within the browser at the moment.

You cannot have 2 profiles in FireFox with the same name. Because of this, if you want to keep your current profile name you must rename the profile you want to move before following the steps below. If you intend to move the profile and give it a different name, no need for this step.

I know, right? Don’t trip. It’ll make sense later.

To move your profile folder/s to another location follow the steps below.

1: Launch FireFox

2: Type About:Profiles in the URL bar and press ENTER.

3: Verify the directory of the profile you intend to move.

4: Open the Root directory of the desired profile by clicking the “open folder” button to the right of the ROOT DIRECTORY.

In the Explorer window make sure you go “up” one folder so that you end up viewing the profile folder itself, not the contents within it. You can also navigate to the profiles folder manually.

5: Copy and paste the profile folder to where you want it. Let the process complete.

6: Back at the About Profiles window within Firefox, hit the “Create a new profile” button.

7: Click next on the Profile Wizard welcome screen.

8: Select “Choose Folder”

9: Navigate to and select the folder you copied and pasted from step 5.

10: Give your profile a name. The same name you were already using or a new one if you’d like. Confirm the new profile location and press finish.

**If you didn’t change the name of the old profile before doing these steps, you will not be able to use the same profile name. You will have to use a different name when creating the new profile, delete the old profile afterwards, and then rename the new profile to whatever it was originally. Follow?

***When creating a new profile, if you point to a folder that already has a profile in it, FF will simply use the profile that’s already there. It will not over-write or delete anything.

11: Load the profile to confirm all is intact. If you are happy, delete the old/original profile and folder.

DONE. PROFILE MOVED! 🙂
