Innovative Hip-Hop – Vol. 1
Hip Hop is awesome and has influenced just about everything in the modern world. Partly because it is the child of so many other tone setting musical and cultural breakthroughs from the people of rich melanin. There’s so many uncharted creative land masses of music for those who think they don’t listen. Even for the intellectual, the revolutionary, the party head, the inter-dimensional spiritualist, the religious, the reckless and the ravenously willful retards. So to all you haters…
“If you were thinkin’ you wouldn’tve thought that!”
Anyway, here’s the first installment of 9 Hip-Hop thumpers from our archives. And they should be in yours, too! There’ll be plenty more where this one came from. So stay tuned my MPC pad punching, 88 key workstation touching, only 16 bars but 144 words stuffing, I spent my last dubb on 3 vinyls and a English McMuffin, cryptochronilite crushing, Makaveli and Jeru Da Damaja coming out the 15’s bumping, Amigos!….
Juvenile - U Understand
Juve has always been one of my favorites. The first time I heard him I was down south on the Grambling University college campus visiting from Chicago. His song, “Ha” was playing on the radio and I was hooked. This was early on before he was a big name. Apparently he was already popping in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. He started a trend of spitting bars then saying a consistent phrase or word after nearly every line. It’s very catchy and works well in his case since it does not take away from the skill or lyricism. He, along with the rest of The Hot Boys, popularized many phrases and words from the N.O. slang archives! This one here is fyah, U Understand?!
Serius Jones - Re-Up
Serius has been on our radars every since he smashed Jin The Emcee on the MTV2 hit show ‘Fight Klub’. This battle rap show helped expose many battle artists along with the battle rap scene in general. Jin is definitely no slouch. It’s just that Serius is one of the coolest, calmest, collected artists to grace the show. He had bars. Metaphors, punchlines and a great deal of serious humor that coated his lyrics as if his opponents were a joke to him. Not many artists from the battle arena can transition well into songs and albums. It’s a known issue among the culture. Serius is one that can hold his own weight and keeps the Hip-Hop culture intact with bars and a message. His music is inspiring to say the least. Go ahead and get amped to this track. Time to RE-Up and go hard on your goals!
Fabulous & Jadakiss - Soul Food
Fab and Jada. If you’ve been around, you’ve been rocking with them since The Lox and Desert Storm. These two legends have been doing their thing for a long time. They’ve decided to form a group and give you some of the realest Hip Hop you can find. This song is up to par lyrically and it delivers a powerful message that is strong and inspiring. It shows their maturity and the power of collaboration. Definitely food for the soul! Something the general Hip Hop scene seems to be heavily lacking around these times. “I’m too old to kid ya/I gotta adult ya”!
Jay-Z - Dead Presidents
Does this song even need an explanation? Does Jigga even need one? Of course not..
Locksmith - Rare Form
Oh snaps! Lock wrecked shit with this one! This is definitely what you call Hip Hop in rare form. Lock is one of those artists that refused to settle, conform and commercialize. His lyrics are on another level. His videos are very visual and well produced. This one was the first track I heard from Lock, and it was on MTV2. He called out a few artists in this track. Nobody dared respond. Can you blame them? I was on 10! Extra glad to hear hardcore, advanced bars being presented and aired. If anybody denies Locksmith, it is safe to assume they are either a hater or partially musically retarded.
Naughty By Nature - Hip Hop Hooray
It is really hard for me to explain exactly how influential, nostalgic and inspiring this joint is. This has been one of the never ending Hip Hop anthems since its release. Hooray for Hip Hop, as if it is a Noble Super Hero Entity. The sounds, the drums, the cadence of the flow. Masterfully done by Treach, Vin and DJ Kay! The video takes you into the heart of the people and their cultural struggles. The music lifts you up and gives you energy and heart. It is undeniable!
Common - The Game
Gotta rep one for my brother from Chi-Town. Common Sense always delivers. He has stayed true to his sound, the rhythm, the culture and the message. Common is a personification of what Hip Hop is all about. Let him school you on The Game!
Joey Bada$$ - Unorthodox
I’m not even sure where I first heard Joey. All I know is he is a Bad Ass! You are definitely gonna have to listen more than once and tell everybody to shut the F*#! up while his tracks are rocking. The title of this track speaks for itself. Joey is some kind of Christ Conscious magical artists that has done a brilliant job bringing classic Hip Hop to the current generation with literally zero compromise. The video for this track is in a class of its own. I think it’s produced with some form of roto-scoping. Something similar to Michael Jackson’s Human Nature or Aha’s Take On Me!
EPMD - Da Joint
EPMD is definitely a world premiere! According to the video, Russell convinced them to do this one. Thank God for Mr. Simmons and EPMD. This one is Da Joint! Eric Sermon and Parish Smith are an amazing Hip Hop duo that always delivers and brings something new to the game.

Sorry about that. HTPI reads every single comment before it is posted to our site.
