Showing and Hiding File Extensions In Windows Explorer

A file extension is the letters at the end of a file’s name. If you’d like a more thorough explanation on understanding file extensions, check this article out.

 

In Windows Explorer, many files extensions are hidden by default. You can change this setting if you need to. Here’s how.

1: Hit the Start Menu and type: folder options

2: Click the File Explorer Options entry that appears.

A window will appear called File Explorer Options.

 

3: Click on the View tab.

4: Make sure ‘hide extensions for known file types’ is NOT checked.

5: Hit Apply, then hit OK.

 

That’s it. If you want to hide them again later just go back and check that box. Simple.
